As more evidence of corruption and tender contract irregularities is being investigated by law enforcement agencies and with the net closing in on those implicated, the safety and protection of whistleblowers and witnesses has once again come under the spotlight. On Monday, Babita Deokaran, Chief Director of Financial Accounting at the Gauteng Department of health was shot outside her home, a few moments after she had dropped her child at school. She passed away at the hospital a few hours later.
The Special Investigation Unit has confirmed that Deokaran was one of the witnesses in the PPE fraud and corruption investigation involving the Gauteng Department of Health.
While witnesses and whistleblowers are the cornerstone in fighting and exposing corruption within government departments, what happens when their lives are threatened? To talk more on this, we are joined by Mandy Wiener, journalist and author of The Whistleblowers.

The world is doomed as it’s a global crime
it’s not only security… but it also livelihood… most of these whistleblowers will need money to support their families. RIP
Only the death penalty will save South Africa.
